The organisation charged with making Lowestoft town centre as attractive as possible to residents and visitors alike has stepped up its campaign to dissuade gulls and other bird species from ruining their experience.
Lowestoft Vision, the town’s Business Improvement District, has been using the services of a local falconry business to scare off gulls and pigeons from key retail and recreational areas and to ensure that they nest well away from the centre.
Now, with the summer well underway, the team at Lowestoft Vision is launching a marketing campaign to encourage people not to feed those birds that are still around.
Using colourful and eye-catching images, the ‘Don’t Feed the Birds’ campaign is made up of posters and stickers which are being distributed to key locations and businesses across the town centre.
The campaign is also urging businesses to keep their own bins and other areas where food waste might be stored as secure as possible.
According to Dan Poitras, chair of Lowestoft Vision: “Gulls and pigeons aren’t interested in interacting with people – they’re just after your food. But the mess and disturbance caused by such feeding frenzies leaves parts of the town centre looking dirty and unkempt.
“One of objectives is to ensure that the centre of Lowestoft is as attractive as possible and residents, visitors and firms can certainly do their bit to help in this endeavour.”
The costs of producing the ‘Don’t Feed the Birds’ stickers and posters have been kindly met by East Suffolk Council.
