Sharing Experience: Conatus
Energy is defined as the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. Everyone has an energy, and we feel this when we meet people or visit a venue with others present – a quiet industrious energy in a library, compared to the bustling energy of a busy train station.
Energy can be based on logic and emotion, and decision-making can be impacted by either or both. We might buy a product simply because it’s useful and fulfils a function, or because it induces an emotional response and it feels right, or we simply love it. Equally, both reasons may come into play.
The spirit of success
Moving forward, it is important that the energy of business leaders balances, otherwise there may be conflicts or delays with decision making that have an adverse impact on business performance. Cohesive energy creates an environment that is collaborative and allows a business to thrive.
Energy in the workforce is also an asset to nurture and develop. As a leader, set the right example and be empathetic to change. Providing support at the right times will assist in keeping the right culture on track. Try to be calm and display a demeanour that doesn’t get too flustered. We can waste a huge amount of mental energy by getting too excited by the highs and too flat with the lows. Dealing with both in a positive and even way helps to avoid this. It doesn’t mean avoiding problems or relishing success, just not expending too much energy in the process.
Be optimistic and mindful of your own behaviour. This is crucial in maintaining energy levels and drive. Being glass-half-full is much more conducive to achieving the desired outcome and will rub off on those around you, so model the traits you want to develop in others.
Vitality matters
Of course, the energy levels in our personal lives are fundamental to those in business, so staying fit and healthy plays a massive role in maintaining our passion and drive. It provides us with the head space to think and process our thoughts. It re-energises us through endorphin release and helps to provide the stamina required for peak performance at work, where we are placed under the mental and potentially physical demands of long days or stressful situations.
By adopting a healthy lifestyle, we can achieve much better management of our stress. Personally, I have always been affected when prevented from undertaking my regular exercise routine, and I have to be really mindful to prevent this from impacting my work productivity.
So, remember the premise of a healthy body, healthy mind!
It doesn’t matter what exercise you do or how energetic it is, just move more and be mindful of your mental wellbeing. This will provide you with the energy required to optimise performance in a business environment. It can also be great fun and something you can enjoy with your family while setting a good example to young family members.
