Running a business in rural North Essex is rewarding, but it’s rarely straightforward. From the sweeping farmland of Uttlesford and coastal communities of Tendring, to the market towns that thread through Braintree, Maldon, Chelmsford and Colchester, rural enterprises are the backbone of our region’s economy, yet for too long they have had to navigate their growth without access to some of the support available to their urban counterparts. With NEEB Link, this is changing.
Funded by the North Essex Economic Board and delivered by The Consortium, NEEB Link is a bespoke business support programme created in direct response to the challenges and realities of the businesses across the region. As a result, the new programme brings support to within reach to rural businesses to fuel their growth.
Understanding the challenge for rural businesses
Rural businesses face a distinct set of pressures that rarely feature in mainstream business support conversations, or struggle to feasibly access programmes. Geography, connectivity, market access and limitations on resources create a trading environment that demands resilience, the ability to quickly adapt and think strategically often with smaller teams, tighter margins, and less time to think ahead.
With the reality of running a rural business, most business support programmes haven’t been able to meet rural business owners where they are. Even the inability to access features like peer support and networking opportunities that are a feature of support programmes in larger towns and cities can isolate rural businesses, and in combination with differences in market reach, capacity and connectivity, this makes operating as a rural business that much more difficult.
NEEB Link: Practical and expert support, delivered locally
The new NEEB Link programme, running from March 2026 – March 2027, addresses the challenges of rural businesses head on with a free of charge and structured programme of masterclass events, workshops and expert led sessions, all planned at accessible venues throughout the districts of Chelmsford, Braintree, Maldon, Uttlesford, Tendring and Colchester. Bringing expert support directly to rural communities, our support is centred around the real hurdles that business owners are facing – covering topics on everything from AI readiness to support rural businesses in adopting new processes, to strategic planning, marketing, finances and more.
Whether a business is a family farm diversifying into new services, an artisan producer looking to scale, a rural tourism enterprise seeking to grow its audience, or a professional services business operating from a village office — NEEB Link is designed for them.
“Rural businesses are at the heart of North Essex, a key part of our economic identity and putting our region on the map for innovation, heritage and more. The NEEB Link programme is our commitment to ensuring that every business in North Essex, regardless of where they’re located, has access to the knowledge, skills and connections it needs to grow.”
Councillor Ivan Henderson, Tendring District Council, NEEB Chair
