Your Trusted Partner: Sue Wilcock, UK Director Business Magazines
When I took over Suffolk Director Magazine eight years ago, I set out with a simple, clear vision – I wanted to help and support our local business community.
Because, I know, being an entrepreneur can be lonely and daunting at times.
Most of us start out with a good idea – a skill or product or service that will potentially fill a gap in the market – but with no actual business experience. And while the responsibility for any success or failure rests firmly on our shoulders, there is no one around to teach us how to run a business properly! So, we just set out with our basic plan, then learn and make mistakes along the way.
Now having launched Norfolk Director, Essex Director, and grown our service offering, my life seems to feel a lot like I am spinning plates. There’s so much to think about and so many areas demanding attention – from overall strategy to sales, to staffing and accounts, to keeping a ready supply of toilet roll for the office! And sharing how you’re feeling with staff, friends and family is often not an option.
So, what if we could create a platform where business leaders could connect and support each other? A trusted, safe community of like-minded people with one thing in common – that we are all working hard to develop our businesses and facilitate the growth and prosperity of our local economy.
UK Director Business Magazines puts this idea into practice.
Our values
Mission established, I wanted to ensure we did things the right way and built the company around five core values:
- To treat people as we wish to be treated.
- To behave with honesty and integrity.
- To deliver quality and value for money.
- To remain focused on our target audience.
- To be commercially aware and principles driven.
Today, those values inform everything we do here.
Inform and inspire
In the magazines, we provide a variety of content – including information, news, tips and advice – while avoiding all the usual jargon and ensuring our articles are concise and easy to read, no matter who you are or what your profession.
In our podcasts, we not only aim to deliver insightful content, but to also get to know our guests on a personal level, putting a human face to the corporate world.
Meanwhile, our events not only provide opportunities to network and chat, but attendees are positively encouraged to question the keynote speakers and the panel of experts; all with a focus on sharing knowledge and experiences and stimulating a healthy discussion around the real issues linked to running a business.
Finally, our Business Club – the most recent addition to the UK Director family – offers the opportunity to meet like-minded people in a relaxed, social environment. We want to bring a bit more joy to what we do on a day-to-day basis and provide a place where people can ‘plug in’ to a community and make good friends, not just useful connections.
Across everything, our simple mission remains: to provide an environment that supports business leaders across the counties we operate in.
And we are constantly looking at ways to achieve that goal – and make the whole process more enjoyable!
