Implementing Continuous Improvement : AMS Business Consultants

As a Certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, I founded AMS Business Consultants a month into Lockdown One in 2020, with the objective of providing local East Anglian businesses with access to the Lean Six Sigma toolkit at an affordable rate. The size of businesses we have helped ranges from a single person business, to one that has 200+ employees; to-date, we have supported over 500 local SMEs achieve more than £19 million in benefits.

This has been achieved by providing advice and help with programme and project management, identifying improvement opportunities, as well as root cause analysis and risks in business processes, before helping clients to transfer them into efficient, effective and stable performing business processes. We also provide training to enable businesses to become self-sufficient.

Offering a variety of approaches

Our first action is to fully understand the needs of the business and how it operates at a process level. We begin with a detailed fact finding exercise, to assess the best approach to meet individual needs.

There are three methodologies that could apply: Process Management, Process Improvement and Process Design.

Process Management: A starting point to ensure the business understands how its processes are performing and which typically allows for process improvement to be discovered.

Following DMO (Define, Measure and Operate), this ensures the correct processes are identified and clear and relevant process measurements are implemented. This is a key part of the delivery, ensuring the change management behaviours of the organisation grow quickly with a focus on customer centricity and elimination of waste.

Process Improvement: This is where we apply Lean Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control), a methodology that is proven and robust, and which AMS has significant experience in demonstrating and delivering results.

We have supported businesses with cost savings in all areas, as well as proposing ways to increase productivity with the same staffing levels. We have streamlined business processes providing resource cost savings and a framework to achieve a more consistent customer experience, enabling the business to grow efficiently and sustainably.

Process Design: Applicable for both start-up and established businesses where either processes cannot be improved any further within reasonable cost constraints, or they don’t exist, we apply the Design for Six Sigma approach. The methodology, called DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyse, Design, Verify), is used to ensure that any product or process design is done in a way that achieves key measures and provides a positive consistent experience for businesses and customers.

The use of data and facts can be a huge factor in breaking down resistance to change. Often businesses are unaware of the data they have available to them, or do not know how to gather the data required, to enable them to reach informed decisions.

We help with that! All of our delivery ensures that solutions are understood and underpinned with measurement and the appropriate data for the clients to be able to achieve a sustainable benefit.
