Location: Stowmarket, The Mix
Dig deeper, grow bigger: an audience with Guy & Jake Nicholls, Tru7 Group
PAST Event
The exclusive ‘Audience with…’ event, held in association with our sponsors Ensors, Birketts, Achilleus Security and Limitless Film & Media, saw Editor Sue Wilcock conduct a live ‘lead interview’ with Guy and Jake, exploring their history, the family dynamic, and why their approach to running the business may be different – Guy straight-talking and instinctive, Jake more strategic and forward thinking – but the core values always stay the same: it’s not about making money, it’s about offering quality and getting better every day.
During their lively chat, Guy also talked about working with his own father and the valuable lessons he learnt along the way, while Jake shared tales from his life as a World-class motorcross rider and the accident that ended his sporting career. Jake also discussed the shortage of workers in construction and the importance of training in the workplace, clearly proud of the apprenticeship programme being run at Tru7 Group.
Finally, each answered a few light-hearted, quickfire questions where we discovered, among other things, their favourite films and most inspirational people.
Then, it was time to take a break.
Q&A
After a short break to network and enjoy refreshments, our special guests answered a variety of questions from the audience. With both stating that nothing was ‘off the table’, these covered a wide range of subjects, including the challenges of health and safety, how they are encouraging more females into the industry, their approach to charitable endeavours, and the key to transforming an initial idea into a successful business. We also discovered the real reasons behind the name TRU7, dispelling some common theories.
So, what else did we learn? We learnt that Guy loves to do a deal, Jake still loves riding on two wheels, and that both men are fiercely passionate about their work, with each stating that the key to success is “living the business”.
With thanks
We would like to thank Guy and Jake for sharing their time, knowledge and experience with all those who attended the event. Each spoke with an engaging mix of humour and personal wisdom, making it an entertaining, inspirational and educational conversation with two people who may differ in their approach to business in many ways, but clearly share a belief in “doing the right thing” first and foremost – just one of the important messages that delegates took away from the morning.
Thanks also to our sponsors Ensors, Birketts and Achilleus Security, together with our trusted partners Limitless Film & Media and Pagepix
And finally…
Sue closed the event by explaining the ethos of UK Director Business Magazines: to build a community of friends, not just business partners; a group of likeminded people who support each other during the trials and tribulations of running a business.
We are thrilled to know our work continues to support and connect local business leaders, big and small, and we look forward to providing more magazines, podcasts, events and connection opportunities aimed at helping you to run your business better.
Thank you to all who attended.
