How a strong culture shapes strong results

By Tim Coll, TMJ Interiors
Strong results start with the culture behind them. When people feel encouraged to show character, take initiative and bring enthusiasm into their work, everything else follows - quality, teamwork, resilience and long term client trust.

This belief is at the heart of how we operate, and it’s the reason we continue to see 94% repeat business and 97% client satisfaction across the projects we deliver.

Culture doesn’t happen by chance, it grows from the attitudes and behaviours we champion every day: supporting teammates when pressure rises, taking pride in craftsmanship, challenging ourselves to go further and owning decisions even when they’re difficult. These behaviours reflect the core values our business was founded on and set the standard for who we are and how we operate.

Entering 2026, we redefined our core values to capture the mindset, ambition and spirit that will drive our next stage of growth. These values provide our people with a shared sense of purpose and meaningful direction, as we endeavour to create exceptional environments for all our stakeholders. More than statements on a page, these values are designed to ignite the behaviours that make TMJ a place where people can thrive, take ownership and feel genuinely proud of the contribution they make.

The most powerful values don’t just guide a business; they attract people who believe in them. And when individuals unite around a shared set of principles, they create the collective momentum that makes extraordinary achievements possible.

Building a culture where people thrive

To bring out the best in our teams, we focus on development, connection and confidence. Apprenticeships, training pathways and personal development opportunities ensure that everyone – whether newly joined or decades into their career – has the chance to grow. Our New Starter Forum strengthens this further by giving new colleagues the confidence to share feedback early on, helping them feel heard, valued and part of the team from day one.

But culture isn’t built through programmes alone – it’s built in the everyday moments. Taking a genuine interest in how someone is doing, or making space for new ideas, creates trust and belonging. When people feel seen and supported, they’re far more confident to innovate, contribute and take pride in their work.

To reinforce connection across the business, TMJ runs an annual calendar of staff events. These moments bring teams together, build relationships across departments and give us the chance to celebrate successes throughout the year.

In 2025, we recognised 549 combined years of service through our Loyalty Awards which is something we are very proud of. Fresh ideas and development matter, but the value of experience cannot be overstated.

One of my favourite quotes from Sir Richard Branson captures this perfectly: “Train people well enough so they can leave. Treat them well enough so they don’t want to.” It’s a principle we believe in and one that has proven itself time and again within our business.

When we invest in culture, we invest in performance. Lift your people and they will lift your business in turn.
