Continuous Improvement: Andy Skinner, AMS Business Consultants
How do you give your business a competitive advantage and make it stand out in your industry? Do you disrupt your market? Given the impact of the October budget, I think these are extremely important questions that businesses need to be asking themselves, now more than ever.
A focus on continuous improvement is crucial to becoming a disruptor. It can encourage a culture of innovation, allowing you to uncover new ideas and approaches that have the potential to disrupt your industry. By being open to change and embracing new thoughts and concepts, you will increase business agility. This agility allows you to adapt quickly and take advantage of opportunities to disrupt the status quo, and to respond quickly and effectively to market trends and customer needs.
You will truly understand what your customers actually need versus what they say they want (which are often different). Using this ‘voice of the customer’ effectively and proactively, you will be in a better position to understand and meet their changing needs and preferences. A customer-centric approach will lead to disruptive innovations that will resonate strongly with your audience.
Review and refine
By continually refining your processes, products, and services, you will be more likely to stay ahead of your competitors. This approach will also allow you to identify waste within the business and eliminate it, ensuring your products and services are provided more quickly and cheaply without compromising on quality of service.
Through promoting this efficiency and effectiveness in your operations, you can free up resources to invest in disruptive initiatives and improve your ability to challenge industry norms.
Embracing and constantly reviewing new technology to improve processes and enhance the customer experience is essential and does not need to be cost prohibitive. If you invest in providing all your staff with the tools and skills to focus on process improvement, you will underpin a culture of innovation. More importantly, you will establish a workplace where ideas are welcomed, and employees are empowered to think outside the box and take calculated risks.
A problem shared
One of the ways I have achieved this with AMS is to collaborate with others – in some cases even competitors – to deliver a better service than could have been achieved by either party independently.
We have worked with many businesses to support the implementation of well-thought-through, comprehensive continuous improvement programmes, which have seen our clients go on to be leaders in their markets.
To position your business as a disruptor does not necessarily require large budgets. While having a big budget can provide certain advantages, being resourceful, innovative, and customer-focused can help you disrupt your industry effectively even with limited financial resources.
