Is your knowledge too people-based?

Operations & Process: Flowchest

What happens when the engineer who knows exactly how to fix the machine isn’t there, or the production supervisor everyone goes to when something goes wrong isn’t there, or the experienced operator who can train a new starter simply by showing them how it’s done isn’t there.

Of course, these people are invaluable, but there is a hidden risk when too much operational knowledge lives with individuals rather than within the business. What happens when they are on holiday? When they leave? When you need to onboard ten new people rather than one?

For many businesses, the answer is surprisingly familiar: someone stops what they are doing and explains it again. And it might only take five minutes. But multiply that across a team, across shifts and across hundreds of processes, and the cost becomes significant.

There is another problem. Businesses often believe their processes are documented because they have standard operating procedures (SOPs), manuals and PDFs. But documentation isn’t necessarily the same as usable guidance.

So, the question is perhaps not whether your business has documented its knowledge; it is whether your people can use it when and where they need to.

When someone is standing beside a machine, handling a product or carrying out an unfamiliar task, they don’t necessarily need another 40-page manual – they need to know what to do next.

That is where operational knowledge needs to change.

The right tool for the right job

What if an employee could stand at a workstation, scan a QR code and immediately access the exact process they need? Short, clear steps. Visual guidance. The right tools and materials. No searching. No waiting for someone to become available.

That is the thinking behind Flowchest, a Suffolk-built platform designed to turn existing processes, SOPs and operational knowledge into simple, step-by-step digital guidance.

The aim isn’t to replace experienced people; it is to make their knowledge easier to share, repeat and retain. And for operational leaders, that can mean less interruption, faster onboarding, more consistent processes and greater resilience when key people aren’t available.

Flowchest is now looking for a small number of Suffolk manufacturers, engineering businesses and operational teams to become founding operations partners. If you have a function that currently depends too heavily on one person, we’d like to hear from you.

Give us one process: We’ll show you what it could look like.

 Are you a Suffolk business?
Do you have a process that relies too heavily on one person?
We’re looking for five founding operations partners.
If you think Flowchest could help your business…
