J Medler Ltd: 50 years building success


Established in 1973 by Norfolk businessman the late John Medler, builders merchant J Medler Ltd is a third generation family-owned business that has seen many changes and challenges over the last 50 years.

Yet one thing has remained a constant for J Medler: its focus on people.

“This is a strong, stable, hard-working family business that has always put people at the heart of everything we do,” says Steve Davy, Sales Manager at J Medler Ltd. “Our people always aim to make a difference and that’s what really makes us stand out from the crowd.”

Celebrating half a century this year, J Medler Ltd, based at what was the family home in Felthorpe near Norwich, is a specialist brick and block supplier with customers in East Anglia, London and the South-East, and across the UK.

J Medler Ltd is run by Directors Dawn Wymer and Dean Medler. The children of founder John Medler, who sadly passed away in 2009.

Keeping it in the family, Dawn has two sons working in the builders merchant business, one involved in sales and the other in commercial and purchasing.

Supplying to the building trade for 50 years

As well as stocking more than 300 brick types via a dozen or so brick suppliers and a range of building blocks from both local and national suppliers, the company provides a range of clay tiles and landscaping products to retailers, builders, contractors, local and national developers, and architects.

Significant contracts have included major venues such as the London 2012 Olympics Velodrome, the Compton & Edrich stand at Lord’s Cricket Ground and the MK Dons stadium in Milton Keynes.

J Medler Ltd has also supplied materials to GCHQ, Canary Wharf, Birmingham Bullring, Westfield Stratford City shopping centre, apartment schemes at Ealing Filmworks and Chelsea Barracks, and a new hospital in Gibraltar.

Closer to home, it was involved in the new police hub at Norfolk Constabulary’s Broadland Business Park.

Continuing to grow

Like other SMEs, J Medler Ltd has faced its fair share of challenges in recent times: the Covid pandemic, Brexit, material shortages, economic downturns, inflation and rising costs to name a few. But in spite of it all, the company has gone from strength to strength.

It has forged many long-standing relationships, and is also committed to finding new customers that will bring it further growth.

“New business comes from our reputation, word of mouth, and our experienced and knowledgeable sales team,” explains Steve. “What we do is not rocket science – but fair, honest service is what stands you in good stead. We’ve survived the ups and downs, we’re still here and we’re going strong.”

As it grows, J Medler Ltd is ever mindful of the legacy of its founder and the principles he laid down 50 years ago, which are very much evident today. From the third generation of the family, supported by their experienced parents, to the 14-strong core team of builders merchant staff – many of whom are long-standing employees – along with yard staff and drivers.

“We treat people the way we’d like to be treated and we go the extra mile,” reflects Steve. “Customers still love to do business face-to-face, and we’re very proud of the fact that we deliver great personal service; always looking to add value for the customer – after all, people still buy from people.”
