Charity: Big C

The objective of the Big C Health Academy is to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and a greater understanding of the disease across health professions and in the general community.

The new Health Academy ‘houses’ the charity’s team of education experts including health education officers and nutritionists who run exercise and nutrition programmes designed for those affected by cancer, including ‘Get Moving’, ‘Nourish & Nurture’ and seated Pilates and Yoga.

Health events

Big C has also announced a new series of health events across Great Yarmouth and Waveney in collaboration with Norfolk & Waveney ICB, targeted to help people in ‘harder to reach’ communities understand the signs and symptoms of cancer and the importance of attending screening appointments, to support early diagnosis.

The events are diverse in the types of venues and activities which are on offer. A full list of events can be found at https://www.big-c.co.uk/support-and-information/health-academy-events/.

At some locations, where space permits, the charity will be bringing along Big C’s Big Bum; a giant inflatable walk-through exhibit showing the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer. Where the location doesn’t allow, a virtual tour of the Big Bum will be available, created by the talented team at Norwich based https://www.vortexvisual.co.uk.

Education programmes

From fun games to having a go on a smoothie bike, there will be an opportunity to find out more about the importance of healthy eating, with low budget recipe demonstrations and a copy of Big C’s free cookbook ‘Essential Flavour’.  At every event, the Big C team will be on hand to talk through any concerns people may have, with a private space for individuals wanting 1:1 support. There will be a variety of leaflets to take away with further information.

Dr Melanie Pascale, Director of Charitable Operations at Big C, said, “Although we are well known for our support and information services, people perhaps know less about our education programmes which we see as being equally vital to the work we do to help those affected by cancer in our community, now and in the future. We have ambitious plans for this element of our strategy and welcome interest from any corporate who would be interested in exploring funding of our activities.”

More information about all of Big C’s support and education services can be found on their new website http://www.big-c.co.uk a large and comprehensive but extremely easy to navigate resource for everyone needing information or help relating to cancer.

To create their new website, Big C worked with local company, Creativity Unbound https://creativityunbound.co.uk  who specialise in creative marketing for charities and good causes.

Faith Hill, Cancer Care Patient Navigator at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn, said “The new website is amazing! I can’t believe how much information is on there and I really love the service ‘user stories’. I’ll be recommending it to all my patients.”
