Charity: Norfolk Heart Trust

The Memorial Events, which take place over the 14/15th September 2023, are part of fundraising on behalf of the Norfolk Heart Trust (NHT), established to fight cardiac disease and improve quality of life for patients. They are being organised by friends of the late Dr Iain Brooksby, who was a cardiologist for 40 years, and spent three decades of them at the NNUH where he helped hundreds of patients.

More than 50% of the population will have heart and circulatory problems in their lifetime and heart disease is the single biggest cause of death in the UK.

The new MRI will treble capacity

Currently with the cardiology department at NNUH only having limited access to a scanner, the most pressing need is to purchase a dedicated state-of-the art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) scanner. The £1.2million machine will more than treble capacity, and more importantly, as it is non-invasive, will be able to be used for children – at the moment families must travel to the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London for treatment.

“This incredible piece of equipment will be a real ‘gamechanger’ for Norfolk and identifies the structure and function of all aspects of the working heart,” said Jonathan Ellis, chair of the Iain Brooksby Memorial Event. “The MRI provides breathtakingly detailed information without invading the body or exposing a person to radiation.”

NHT is one of the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association’s chosen charities and it is looking forward to sharing matters of the heart at this year’s Show.

How can business help?

British Heart Week takes place from the 7th to the 15th June, and the NHT is asking businesses to consider either supporting the NHT MRI scanner appeal as their charity of the year, or for payroll giving.

Norfolk Heart Trust is a sub-fund within the Norfolk Community Foundation. To get involved in supporting the charity, please visit  Even £5 a head, when added together, can make a huge difference.
