In today’s fast-paced, unpredictable business environment, energy is everything.

However, with mounting challenges, it’s easy for business leaders to lose sight of a vital resource: themselves.

When times get tough, the instinct for many owners is to double down on work, pushing harder, sacrificing personal time and disregarding their wellbeing. This might seem productive in the short term, but the energy you bring to your business is contagious – if you’re drained and running on empty, your employees, partners and clients will notice.

As a leader, you set the tone.

Know your ‘tells’

They will be there – do you know them? It has taken me 30 years to learn mine! Silly things like my house plants die because I don’t water them. Perhaps I’ll have that second glass of wine. I will become more energetic with tidying up, both at home and in the office. Even my dog knows.

Stress and exhaustion don’t just take a toll on your physical health, it is scientifically proven that they negatively impact your decision-making abilities. Moreover, prolonged stress has been linked to a range of health issues such as heart disease, anxiety and depression.

So, what can you do?

Like the flight attendant always says: put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. This doesn’t mean abandon your responsibilities, but rather recognise that by maintaining your physical and mental health, you’ll be in a stronger position to tackle the challenges ahead. Here are a few practical steps to keep your energy levels high:

  • Set Boundaries. Learn to say no to overworking. You’ll be more effective during your work hours if you allow time for rest and relaxation.
  • Exercise and nutrition. Regular exercise and a balanced diet are key to maintaining energy. Even a short walk or a few minutes of stretching can refresh your mind and body.
  • Adapt and pivot: Mental clarity is just as important as physical vitality. Simply taking time to clear your mind can improve your decision-making and help you make changes where needed.
  • Delegate. As a business owner, it can be tempting to wear all the hats. But remember that your team is there to help. Delegate tasks and trust others to take on responsibilities.
  • Reconnect with purpose. In times of uncertainty, reconnecting with why you started your business in the first place can reignite your passion and motivation.
  • Lead by example. Your team looks to you for guidance, and your energy and actions will shape the mood in the room and how they respond.

Remember, taking care of your health and wellbeing isn’t just a personal choice, it’s a leadership strategy – in both good times and bad.
