The art of the pivot: the spirit to adapt

By Nicholas Pandolfi, Panda Studios
If you had asked me during my early cinematography training where I’d be today, I would have described a life behind the lens. But a career is rarely a straight line; it is often the response to a firm shove in the back!

My own journey, from the corridors of Grange Hill and the audio world of ‘Brian from Melton’, to life on the Suffolk coast today, has been fuelled by three things: character, courage and a deep well of enthusiasm. And these traits are underpinned by a determination to deliver for those who supported me early on.

It is easy to be pigeonholed. People might see a former performer and assume that defines the limit of their skill set. In reality, every role I’ve held, from appearing in Oscar-winning movies to working with the marketing team at Harrods, has taught me that business is, at its heart, about character. And throughout my four decades of experience in television, film, theatre and audio, I’ve learnt that great communication is about more than just being heard – it’s about making an authentic connection.

Because whether you are on a West End stage or in a boardroom, the foundation of success is the same: engagement with your audience.

Serving your audience

In my experience of helping SMEs, the biggest mistake made is to treat video as a ‘tick-box’ exercise. Because the single most powerful tool an SME has today is high-impact video content.

To run a business better, we must move away from generic clips and instead create content that people actually want to consume. We must shift our focus from just ‘making a video’ or ‘recording audio’, to crafting a program that people will actually connect with. To do that, you must find the human heart of your message and bring that story to life.

Of course, true engagement happens when that professional storytelling meets a clear digital strategy. By syncing that strategy with a voice that’s unmistakably yours, you can ensure your message hits home and stays there.

My advice to any leader is to ensure your video presence is as intentional as your handshake. If it doesn’t serve the audience’s needs, it isn’t serving your business.

Personal growth

I am my own boss now, and while I’ll admit to the occasional 3am jolt in bed about cashflow, it is hugely enjoyable. For years, I carried a heavy suit of imposter syndrome, but today I tell it to ‘jog on’.

We are all capable of more dexterity than we give ourselves credit for. Success isn’t about staying in one lane; it’s about having the spirit to smile, carry on and provide real value to those you serve.
