The reward of corporate support

With one in two of us likely to experience cancer at some point in our lives, many will be touched by the disease, either ourselves or through friends, family or work.

Charity: Big C

Local cancer charity, Big C, is close at hand. Not only for individuals and families but for its region’s employers, offering them the tools and information they need to best support anyone affected by cancer in the workplace.

Being aware of the free holistic care services that Big C provides across Norfolk and North Suffolk can be a valuable way to empower and support employees when they are most vulnerable. And Big C has seven centres and hubs in the county and a full-service virtual support centre for those unable to visit in person.

The services available include person-centred counselling, welfare guidance, family and group support, nutrition and wellbeing programmes and complementary therapies. For anyone interested in finding out more, then please do get in touch with the Big C Support team at

Could you become a Big C partner?

The outstanding care Big C offers to those with a cancer diagnosis and their loved ones in the region is not commonplace nationally. Despite the NHS long-term plan requiring that patients have access to ‘health and wellbeing information and support’, in areas where a cancer support charity like Big C doesn’t exist, this still falls far short of the ideal 360-degree holistic care that leads to the best outcomes.

Norfolk is very fortunate that Big C founders David Moar and Clive Bamford had the foresight back in 1980, to realise there was a great need for cancer support in the county. They started the charity, which has grown exponentially over the past 40 years. It has expanded its reach, breadth of support and depth of understanding about how best to help those facing the immense challenge of a cancer diagnosis. It helps those undergoing necessary treatment, supports those close to them, or those with responsibilities in the workplace.

Big C has also invested more than £12.5 million in cancer research projects at the Norwich Research Park. But despite loyal support from the local community, raising the required funds to allow this vital work to continue every year is an ongoing challenge.

Big C’s Head of Income Generation, Jo Leah, explains: “The corporate support we receive is one of our most important avenues of income, and we are enormously grateful to all of those companies and business leaders who choose to help Big C, including Alan Boswell, Indigo Swan, Jarrold, Loveday & Partners, Norwich Accountancy, Yellow Brick Mortgages and Norwich Airport.

“As we all know, these are challenging times, with budgets being tightly squeezed. But many companies are wonderfully committed to their CSR programmes and corporate giving. We would like to openly engage with and welcome discussion with any local organisation keen to support those affected by cancer in our community.

“We’re delighted that the businesses we connect with tell us that working with Big C and its service users is a very rewarding experience. We view these relationships as partnerships which we hope are mutually beneficial.”

How can corporate organisations support Big C?

Charity of the Year or Event Sponsorship

At the beginning of this new calendar year, or as the new financial year approaches, could you nominate Big C as your charity of the year and involve your staff in a programme of fundraising and team-building activities? Or could you perhaps become the headline or category sponsor for a Big C event?

Team Fundraisers

Big C organises and participates in various events throughout the year, from daring adventure challenges to family events and bake-offs. So, why not rally the troops and ask your team to challenge themselves to try something new in 2023? It’s a great way to bring everyone together and encourage team spirit in our new world of hybrid working.

2023 events include Big Cuppa for World Cancer Day, the Blickling Half Marathon and the Big C Golf Day at Stoke By Nayland. Find out more at

Corporate Volunteering

Big C welcomes corporate volunteer placements. These are flexible in format and can take place across the charity’s operations, from retail (shops or distribution) to events and charitable operations.

In the past year, Big C has welcomed staff from John Lewis, NielsonIQ Brandbank and Leeds Building Society, who volunteered with Big C in the distribution centre. Leeds Building Society has also helped provide volunteers for events for several years.
