Not many understand the pressure of defusing a bomb. Even fewer understand doing it underwater, when visibility is all but gone. The clock is ticking. The pressure is real. The risk? Unimaginable. In those moments, you understand trust isn’t optional; it’s both intrinsic and perpetual. I trust myself to do the job. I trust my team to keep me safe. And they trust me to do the same. It’s mutual. It’s earned. It’s integral to the operation.

But how does this relate to business?

I come from a military background, where clarity, structure and accountability weren’t buzzwords – they were survival. And whether working as a Royal Navy diver or in marketing, the principles remain the same, only the environment has changed.

There’s a reason we use words like strategy and tactics in business. They weren’t born in the boardroom; they were forged in the field. In both arenas, success relies on coordination, situational awareness and, above all, trust.

In diving, you trust that the air in your tank won’t fail. In marketing, you trust that your message will land, that the people you serve will believe in what you say and how you show up.

Marketing: the frontline of trust

Do you trust the person, or do you trust the brand?

We’ve all made a big purchase – a car, a watch, a piece of software. Did you trust the salesperson pushing for the sale, or the brand behind it? In the military, you need both. You trust the individual beside you and you trust the system behind you. One without the other, and the operation fails. The same applies to business.

Brand is the commercial system, the structure, processes and behavioural consistency. We define it as user experience, customer-shaped persuasion.

Branding is the expression of how that system is made visible and felt.

Marketing is the battlefield where both are stress-tested in real conditions.

Every campaign, post or pitch is a test of credibility. You can’t buy trust. You earn it by showing up consistently, delivering value and aligning your actions with your message.

Too many businesses try to market ‘trust’ before they’ve built it, shouting louder instead of speaking clearer. But without the foundation of belief and reliability, even the best campaign collapses.

Trust as a competitive advantage

In diving and bomb disposal, trust saves lives. In business, it sustains them. It’s what turns customers into advocates, teams into movements and businesses into brands people believe in.

Brand building isn’t just about visibility, it’s about dependability. It’s about being the brand that does what it says, time and time again, especially when no one’s watching.

Because whether you’re 60 meters underwater or launching a new campaign, the principle remains the same: trust isn’t spoken, it’s shown. It’s built. It’s lived.
