Talent. It’s a word we hear often in the workplace, on CVs, in interviews and during performance reviews. But what does it really mean? And how can organisations make the most of it?

At its core, talent refers to a person’s natural aptitude or skill. Some people are born with it.  Think of the colleague who can visualise complex problems instantly, or the designer whose creativity seems to flow endlessly. These are examples of natural talent, and they often stand out early.

But talent isn’t always obvious. Many skills and capabilities need to be nurtured over time. The quiet team member who listens more than they speak, might possess a remarkable talent for strategy or innovation, something that only emerges with encouragement and opportunity. That’s why supporting the growth and discovery of your team’s hidden talent is just as important as recognising what’s already visible.

As a leader, your role goes beyond recruiting known talent. It’s about creating an environment where all kinds of talent can be seen, supported and synergised. When adding new people to your team, it’s tempting to look for standouts; those who immediately tick every box. However, it’s important to be mindful of the possible ‘hidden’ talent that already exists within your team. Overlooking what you already have can lead to imbalances, redundancies, or worse, demotivation.

Partner up

This is where partnering with a recruitment specialist who challenges the Recruitment Manager on their existing team dynamics, can be an advantageous benefit. We are objective and can provide valuable feedback. I personally support teams who are a mix of talents – bringing through the second and third generations of professionals.

This is a strategy that needs planning, not just placement and is one of the most powerful approaches. Diversity of skills, experiences and mindsets doesn’t just make a team more balanced, it makes it more capable of adapting, innovating and solving problems creatively. A mix of analytical thinkers, creative minds, detail-oriented planners and big-picture visionaries can help your team see all angles of a challenge.

That kind of mix doesn’t happen by accident. It requires thoughtful observation and an ongoing commitment to development. Managers should regularly check in with their teams, not just about performance but about growth. What new skills do they want to build? What hidden strengths might be ready to surface?

Allowing talent to shine

Creating space for people to explore and stretch can uncover unexpected abilities. Offering mentorship, cross-training or even informal collaboration across departments, can spark new ideas and uncover talents no one knew were there, including the individual themselves.

Ultimately, creating a talented team is more than a tick box process of matching a CV to a job description. It’s a living, evolving part of your organisation. Some of it walks in the door fully formed. Other parts develop slowly, through experience and encouragement and building their confidence. The key is to see talent as dynamic. With the right mix, and the right mindset, your team becomes more than just a collection of individuals, it becomes a high-performing ecosystem of potential, where every member contributes.

So whether you’re recruiting, leading or growing a team, take the time to look beyond the obvious. Talent might be hiding in plain sight, and when it’s discovered and nurtured, it can transform not just your team but your entire organisation.
