Process: Andy Skinner, AMS Business Consultants
The best strategies, in my opinion, are created by engaging all stakeholders, regardless of hierarchy within the structure. Doing so will ensure that your strategic imperatives:
- Provide direction and focus. A well-defined strategy outlines your goals and the path to achieve them.
- Enhances decision-making. Decision-makers can evaluate options based on how well they support your business goals.
- Competitive advantage. Strategy helps businesses identify what makes them stand out in the market, enabling them to compete effectively.
- Resource allocation. It guides how financial, human and operational resources are allocated, ensuring optimal use and minimising waste.
- Risk management. Anticipate potential challenges and develop contingency plans to mitigate risks.
- Motivation and engagement. Clear direction motivates employees by giving their work purpose and fostering a sense of contribution.
Your optimum strategy
Continuous improvement should be integral, because it fosters ongoing refinement and adaptation, driving operational excellence, customer satisfaction and sustainable growth.
I would like to offer some steps in defining the optimum strategy based on my experience:
- Understand your mission and vision. Define the organisation’s purpose – why it exists – and outline aspirations for the future.
- Conduct a situational analysis. Perform an internal analysis (strengths and weaknesses) with the team, then perform an external analysis (opportunities and threats) – often done through tools like SWOT analysis or PESTEL analysis.
- Identify strategic objectives. Define SMART goals aligned with the mission and vision, and ensure your team’s objectives align and don’t influence the wrong behaviours.
- Determine competitive advantage. Identify what makes your business unique and differentiates it from your competitors.
- Develop strategic initiatives and action plans. Decide on the key initiatives, projects or actions that will lead to your objectives, then allocate resources and assign responsibilities.
- Set metrics and KPIs (key performance indicators). Define how success will be measured to track progress toward goals.
- Communicate and align. Share the strategy across the organisation to ensure everyone understands their role in achieving it.
- Review and revise regularly. Your strategy should be ‘living’, revisited and adjusted as market conditions and business realities change.
Tools such as the Business Canvas Model are great ways to help facilitate in this process.
I would strongly encourage all organisations to include continuous improvement as part of their strategy, and to review that strategy on a frequent basis. I have lost count of the discussions with businesses/business owners who don’t.
