Rougham Estate – Blackthorpe Barns

With a history spanning over 2,000 years, Rougham Estate has witnessed everything from the Romans and Saxons to World War II and the bombing of Rougham Hall which left it in ruins. Today, the estate stands as a living testament to the region’s heritage, while offering a variety of visitor attractions all year round, including a lifestyle store, café, and walks through the ancient meadows, green lanes, and woodland.

Then and now

The historic Rougham Estate has been owned by the Agnew family since 1904.

As the fourth generation to run the 3,000-acre farming concern, current owner George Agnew believes that he is simply a custodian, and his role is to keep moving forward and leave a legacy for those that follow. In the last three decades he has done just that.

In 1991, he converted a former threshing barn for use as an art centre with exhibitions, crafts, and classical concerts. Since then, the now-popular Blackthorpe Barn has grown to showcase a wide range of artists and craft-makers, and this year became home to The Garden Room – a year-round lifestyle shop offering a selection of home decor and garden items. Meanwhile, a new area called The Meadow Room has been refurbished to provide a meeting space for up to 40 people, where businesses can hold seminars, workshops, training, and more.

More widely, visitors can now also enjoy a series of walks through the grounds and refreshments in the new Roots Café throughout the year, along with the chance to pick sunflowers in the summer and pumpkins for Halloween.

And, of course, in October it transforms into a winter wonderland.

Christmas at Blackthorpe Barn

The annual Christmas extravaganza at Blackthorpe Barn is open from October to December and offers everything needed to celebrate the festive season.

George Agnew, and his partner Ady White, say they have taken the popular Christmas shopping experience to a new level for 2024, with a wide variety of treats on offer, including trees, gifts, arts and crafts fairs, workshops, and walks.

George says: “We have reimagined the Christmas Shop creating another enchanting setting, perfect for visitors to immerse themselves in the festive spirit, find unique gifts for their loved ones, and soak up the atmosphere that truly signals the start of Christmas.”

Speaking at this year’s launch event on October 21, he explained that they strive to provide an experience that is different to anywhere else – where memories are created and families return every year.
